Many non-Muslims often wonder why do Muslim women wear hijab?. This question has many answers. Today, we will look at the religious aspect of wearing hijab as well as why Muslim women wear hijab in the modern society.
What does Islam say about Hijab?
The word “Hijab” comes from the Arabic word “hajaba” meaning to hide from view or conceal. In the present time, the context of Hijab is the modest covering of a Muslim woman. The Quran says:
“Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them; and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands…” [Noble Quran 24:30-31]
The purpose of hijab is to be modest and to ward off attention of the opposite gender. We should therefore not wear hijabs which are transparent and tight. This defeats the purpose of hijab.
Why do Muslim Wear Hijab in the modern society
I often get asked, ” why doesn’t she wear hijab?” Hijab is a choice, however it was prescribed upon Muslim women to wear it. Sometimes, a girl will wear hijab the one day and opt not to wear it the next. This confuses non-Muslims and they don’t see hijab as an obligation, but rather as an optional part of our religion. I must confess, I only recently wore hijab properly, but the transition happened in small steps. I wore a scarf everyday but my hair was open infront, then last Ramadaan I decided to wear hijab properly and the rest is history. It might not be something you would do over-night, but you will get there and once you do, you won’t look back. Check this, Difference Between Hijab and Abaya.
Also, with the invention of the scrungy, the hijab is sometimes worn as a fashion statement. The prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is quoted as saying:
“In the latest part of my Ummah (nation of Muslims) there shall be women who would be naked in spite of being dressed, they have their hair high like the humps of the Bukht camel, curse them, for they are cursed. They will not enter Al-Jannah and would not even perceive its odor, although it’s fragrance can be perceived from a distance of 500 years traveling by camel”
Adding to the above point, hijab should not be worn for fame. Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah have related the prophet to saying:
“The one who wears a garment designed for a worldly fame, Allah will make them wear a garment of humility on the Day Of Resurrection then he will be set ablaze.”

So, the simple answer to the question of why Muslim women wear hijab is, for modesty. I remember a saying of a sweet which is often used to explain the importance of hijab. If there are two sweets lying on the floor, one covered in a wrapper and the other without a wrapper. Which one would you choose?
